wikipedia: "The Bosporus (Turkish Boğaziçi, Greek Βόσπορος) is the strait that connects the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea and brand, with the Dardanelles, the southern boundary between the Asian and European continents. It is approximately 30 km long with a width of 550 to 3000 meters.
A popular etymology, his name means "cow crossing" (from Βοῦς [bous], cow, and πόρος [poros] the way) and alludes to the story of Io, beloved girl Zeus changed into a cow by him, and pursued by a gadfly sent by Hera jealous. In fact, the first term (bous) is rather closer to verbs and buo Buzo (the latter being itself probably the origin of the name Buzantion, ancient Byzantium, now Istanbul), meaning "closer." Thus, the Bosphorus would be a "narrow passage". We know more than what strait separates the two parts of Istanbul, a city founded in both Asia and Europe.
The waters of the Bosphorus are paradoxically classified in maritime and international open access. The traffic is one of the largest in the world and meet there many tankers carrying oil from the Black Sea. In 2003, 47,000 ships passed through the Straits, including more than 8000 carrying dangerous cargo, mostly oil or liquefied gas. The Traffic reached some 53 000 vessels in 2004.
Fierce currents and traverse narrow in some places it makes navigation very dangerous. However, because of its internationalization, the presence of a pilot may be required and several serious accidents have occurred there, including three serious collision between two tankers followed by fire, including that of 13 March 1994 which caused the death of 25 sailors. On July 15, 2005, a Panamanian cargo ship carrying scrap metal sank in the waters of the Strait. "
